ABOUT IONA
ENGINEERING & MUSICAL MAGIC
My expertise lies in analog studio recording and digital laptop production, as well as mixing/mastering. I love to use old vintage gear with new creative processes and ideas, and, occasionally, to work with field/outdoor recording.
I like to find something unique for the recording or mix process for every project, to imbue an extra touch of magic into the music.
I'm very happy to slot into projects where I'm needed, being flexible across different roles, and happy to work in a team.
I'm lucky to be mentored by Sean Woodlock & Mikko Gordon, and to have had the opportunity to work on some amazing studio sessions, including for Nigel Godrich, the wonderful Bill Dare (Radio 4) to whom I owe so much, and so many lovely musicians and artists, including Goblin Band, The Water Chorus, Alice Jane, Liya Shapiro, and more!
PROJECT PRODUCTION
If I'm producing your project, I'm all about making a great plan! Whether that's setting some dates and then feeling the music out as we go, or to be much more structured in advance with exact sounds and musical parts created in advance to then take to the studio.
I'll put together a comprehensive session/project guide, so we know how we'll get from idea to finished music, including schedule, budget, location, and any session musicians or videographers we might like bring on board.
FOLK, ALTERNATIVE, POP... AND MORE
I love to record folk music and produce folk records, leaning on my lifetime spent in the folk world at sessions and growing up in the UK Celtic folk scene and culture since I was small.
I also love making alternative/pop/indie records - I have a real love for digital production as well as real instrument recording, making it possible to work solely with one or the other technique, or to create a blended organic but refined sound. Bring on both the hurdy gurdy's and the electric guitars!
I'm always happy to add violin or fiddle to songs - I am able to write full string parts and harmonies where needed.

FROM STUDIOS TO HILLTOPS...
As a producer/engineer I'm all about working with you to make your record happen! Whether you're a solo artist, band, or organisation/ From EP's and albums, to singles, radio shows, or live sessions.
The studio is such a creative and magical space where you can just get lost in making sound. At the moment I'm a resident at Hackney Road Studios, which is full of amazing pro analog gear and has a lovely live room as well as production/mix room.
We can even get the tape machine out, if that's what the project calls for! And you're always welcome to bring your own gear and instruments.

Sarah Ruth, Artist
"I had an amazing time recording and producing my songs with Iona. Despite this being my first time in any sort of recording space, Iona made me feel immediately at home and at ease. She replies quickly and was always able to answer any questions I had, and was happy to hop on a video call to explain anything to me. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better first studio/production experience!"
Anonymous, Songwriter
